기본정보 The National March 15 Democracy Cemetery is dedicated to the deceased among who rose on March 15, 1960 to protest against the corruption and the fraudulent election orchestrated by Rhee Syng-man to maintain his dictatorial powers. It has been established to honor the noble sacrifices made during the March 15 Rally, which later ignited the April 19 Revolution, and to pass on the spirit of Masan citizens who have fought for freedom, democracy and justice.The cemetery was originally established on a 3,960㎡ land on a mountain in Guam-dong in 1967. However, with the first civilian government coming into power in 1993, a project was initiated with the participation of ordinary citizens to create a sanctuary for the souls of those who died in the March 15 Rally. In March 1998, the construction project for the 143,200㎡ March 15 Sanctuary Park was commenced, and the March 15 Monument and Relief, which were symbolic sculptures selected through a contest, were installed in June 2000. Then, in December in the same year, the graves of the democratic activities were moved to the site, marking the completion of the project. The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the National March 15 Democracy Cemetery was held at the March 15 Sanctuary Park on August 1, 2002. This is where people can remember the struggles of the democratic movement and the noble sacrifices made by the patriotic martyrs. It is a place of education, where our current and future generations can learn about the democratization process in Korea, and it is a sacred ground where visitors should maintain reverence as they pay respects to the patriotic martyrs. |
