Are cherry blossoms
a flower of Japan?
In 1910,
during the construction of the Jinhae Naval Port
for the Japanese Navy,
100,500 cherry trees were planted in the area.
Following the liberation from the Japanese colonial rule,
the cherry trees, regarded as a symbol of Japan,
were all cut down.
In the 1960s,
Korean botanists reported their findings
that the flowering cherry trees
have their roots on Jejudo Island.
However,
because it was impossible to obtain seedlings in Korea,
2,000 flowering cherry seedlings
were imported from Japan for plantation.
The Flowering Cherry, native to Korea,
has been designated as Natural Monument No. 156.
Deeply-rooted in the soil of
Doman-dong, Jinhae-gu, Changwon and the Navy compound
are some 360,000 flower cherry trees
that are over 100 years old,
which announce the beginning of spring
every year, with their beautiful cherry blossoms.
